Federation - 1901

After long negotiations throughout the 1890's, all Australian colonies agreed to Federate. The Commonwealth of Australia Constitution Act was passed by the British Parliament in 1900 and became operative on 1 January 1901. South Australia, as a colony, became a State in the Federation, retaining its existing Constitution and apparatus of Government. Under Section 52 of the Commonwealth Constitution the new Federal authority took control over areas which affected the whole nation, while South Australia retained any residual powers.
