Women's Franchise - 1894

South Australia was the first colony in Australia to extend Parliamentary franchise to women, and the first in the world to allow women to stand for election to Parliament

The Constitution Act was amended in 1894 to grant women the right to vote for, and be elected as, Members of either Houses of Parliament. The Adult Suffrage Act caused the most significant change in history to the franchise of the Parliament of South Australia. South Australia was the first colony in Australia to extend Parliamentary franchise to women, and the first in the world to allow women to stand for election to Parliament.
