3       Petitions Nos 29 to 32

The Clerk announced that the following Members had lodged Petitions for presentation:

 

29   The Premier (Hon J W Olsen) from 3 317 residents of South Australia, requesting that the House urge the Government to reverse its decision to close the Sturt Street Primary School.

 

30   The Minister for Primary Industries (Hon R G Kerin) from 271 residents of South Australia, requesting that the House urge the Government to ban the sale of indecent publications from unrestricted newsagents and other retail outlets.

 

31   The Leader of the Opposition (Hon M D Rann) from 1 956 residents of South Australia, requesting that the House urge the Government to establish an independent inquiry into the emergency services section of the Queen Elizabeth Hospital.

 

32   Mr Caudell, from 266 residents of South Australia, requesting that the House urge the Government to ensure the retention of the land known as Laffer’s Triangle as open space.

               Notices of Motion: Other Motions-

 

Mrs Greig to move - That this House calls on the Federal Government to freeze automotive tariff cuts beyond 15% post the year 2000 and to take urgent action prior to 2000 on micro economic reform and at the same time to ensure predicability and certainty in industry policy to provide assurance for the long term viability and competitiveness of our industry base, in particular the South Australian motor vehicle industry.

 


Mr Rann to move - That this House condemns the draft majority report of the Australian Productivity Commission in relation to tariffs protecting our car industry, calls on the Federal Government to reject the report and commit itself to a freeze on car tariffs at 15% from the year 2000 and calls on Federal Liberal MHRs and Senators to fight in the Liberal party room against the lowering of tariffs to a level that would destroy our TCF, motor vehicle and other manufacturing industries.

 

Mr Scalzi to move - That this House commends the Premier for his support of the South Australian motor vehicle and component industry through his stand on tariffs; and urges all Members of the Senate and the House of Representatives to reject the draft report of the Australian Productivity Commission.

 

Mr Atkinson to move - That this House advise the Electoral Districts Boundaries Commission that its policy for naming State districts should give priority to city, town and district names ahead of the names of deceased South Australians.

 

Mrs Greig to move - That this House congratulates Mitsubishi Motors Australia on the outstanding success of the Mitsubishi Magna Verada and all of the Mitsubishi workforce who made it possible for the Verada to be named the 1996 Wheels Car of the Year.
