         The House met pursuant to adjournment. The Speaker (Hon Peter Lewis) took the Chair and read prayers.

 

2       World Congress on Information Technology - Motion re

Hon D C Kotz, pursuant to notice, moved - That this House congratulates the executive committee, members and staff and volunteers of the World Congress on Information Technology on the immense success of the Congress which attracted over 2000 delegates to Adelaide and received international acclaim which acknowledged that South Australia’s presentation of the Congress was the best ever.

         Debate ensued.

         Ordered, on motion of Mrs Geraghty, that the debate be adjourned until Thursday next.

 

3       Eastern Fleurieu R-12 School - Solar Road Race Victory - Motion re

Mrs Redmond, pursuant to notice, moved - That this House congratulates Strathalbyn’s Eastern Fleurieu R-12 School on their victory in the USA as the first Australian team to win the 550km International Solar Express Road Race.

         Debate ensued.

         Ordered, on motion of Mrs Geraghty, that the debate be adjourned until Thursday next.

 

4       Crippled Children’s Association - Hidden Legends Awards - Motion re

Ms Rankine, pursuant to notice, moved - That this House congratulates all those recognised as part of the Crippled Children’s Association’s Hidden Legends Awards, in particular the Hidden Legend for 2002, Sandra Askill and commends each of them for their enduring and valuable contribution to our community as volunteers.

         Debate ensued.

5       Macleod’s Daughters TV Series - Motion re

Hon M R Buckby, pursuant to notice, moved - That this House welcomes the announcement by NWS Channel 9 to extend the popular series Macleod’s Daughters to a third season, notes that the series has been sold to international networks and provides significant economic benefits to the Gawler and District communities and for the film crews and artists of South Australia.

         Debate ensued.

6       Mark Williams - Life Member of the Australian Football League - Motion re

Mrs Geraghty, pursuant to notice, moved - That this House congratulates Port Power Coach, Mark Williams, on becoming a life member of the Australian Football League.

         Debate ensued.

7       Great Australian Cattle Drive - Motion re

Mrs Hall, pursuant to notice, proceeding to move -

That this House congratulates the South Australian Tourism Commission and the Year of the Outback Team on the success of the Great Australian Cattle Drive, and

(a)  acknowledges the significant economic benefits and goodwill this historic event has generated across the outback regions of South Australia;

(b)  congratulates the numerous individuals who participated in this event;

(c)  recognises the valuable international media coverage this State has received for staging this event; and

(d)  urges the State Government to financially support the concept of a similar biennial event in the future.

8       Speaker's Statement – Reflections on the Chair

The Speaker made a statement regarding remarks made on radio this morning by the Member for Chaffey which he regarded as a reflection on the Chair and he duly warned the Member.

         The Acting Clerk announced that the following Member had lodged a Petition for presentation:

 

26   Hon D C Kotz, from 291 electors of South Australia, requesting that the House not support legislation which may seek to extend shop trading hours.

Mr Caica brought up the 180th Report of the Public Works Committee on the Torrens Parade Ground Upgrade.

The Minister for Health to move – That this House establish a Select Committee on Genetically Modified Organisms to inquire into the following –

(a)  how South Australia can assess, within the established Commonwealth-State regulatory framework, the impact of GM plant technology from the point of view of human health, environment and market access;

(b)  identify where the impact of GM plants might be different in South Australia compared with the rest of Australia and other countries, and advise on strategies that South Australia should adopt to address these differences; 

(c)  review the relevant State, national and international reports and inquiries on  GM plants and report on the major issues for South Australia in relation to human health, environmental safety and market access; and

(d)  the means by which the South Australian community can be consulted, informed and consolidate views in relation to  GM plants.
