1       Meeting of House

         The House met pursuant to adjournment. The Speaker (Hon Peter Lewis) took the Chair and read prayers.

 

2       Adelaide Festival and Fringe 2004 - Motion re

            Mr Hamilton-Smith, pursuant to notice, moved - That this House commends –

(a)           the Adelaide Festival Board, chairman Ross Adler and artistic director Stephen Page for the outstanding success of the 2004 Adelaide Festival; and

(b)           the Board of the Adelaide Fringe, chairperson Margie Andrewartha and artistic director Karen Hadfield for jointly delivering an outstanding complementary program.

         Debate ensued.

         Ordered, on motion of Dr McFetridge, that the debate be adjourned until Thursday 6 May.

 

3       V8 Supercar Race - Motion re

Mr Hamilton-Smith, pursuant to notice, moved - That this House commends –

(a)           the South Australian Motor Sport Board, chairman Roger Cook, chief executive Andrew Daniels, all officials and sponsors for the outstanding success of the Clipsal 500 V8 Supercar Race 2004; and

(b)           the Government for continuing to support the event and for moving ministerial responsibility of the event to the Treasurer.

         Ordered, on motion of Mrs Geraghty, that the debate be adjourned until Thursday 6 May.

 

4       Adelaide United Soccer Club - Motion re

Hon D C Kotz, pursuant to notice, moved - That this House notes the outstanding success of the Adelaide United Soccer Club throughout the season and congratulates the team on their recent semi final victory over South Melbourne and extends our good wishes and luck for the preliminary final against Perth.

         Debate ensued.

         Ordered, on motion of Mrs Geraghty, that the debate be adjourned until Thursday 6 May.

 

5       National Motor Vehicle Theft Program - Motion re

Hon D C Kotz, pursuant to notice, moved - That this House calls on the Government to consider implementing the National Motor Vehicle Theft Reduction Council’s “Immobilise Now!” program to reduce car theft in South Australia by offering a subsidy to car owners as an incentive to install an Australian Standard immobiliser in an effort to reduce car theft, youth crime and cost to Government and community.

         Debate ensued.

         Ordered, on motion of Mrs Geraghty, that the debate be adjourned until Thursday 6 May.

8       Censure of the Minister for Employment, Training and Further Education - Motion re

Mr Brindal, pursuant to notice, moved - That this House censure the Minister for Employment, Training and Further Education for misleading this House by deliberately omitting information in her response to a question asked in this House on 31 March.

 

9       Extension of sitting

Ordered, on motion of the Minister for Transport (Hon P L White), that the sitting of the House be extended beyond 1.00 pm.

11      Suspension and resumption of sitting

         At 1.05 pm the sitting of the House was suspended.

         At 2.00 pm the Speaker resumed the Chair.

 

12      Petitions Nos 61 to 63

         The Clerk announced that the following Members had lodged Petitions for presentation:

 

61   The Premier (Hon M D Rann), from 355 citizens of South Australia, requesting the House to take all steps possible to place public pressure on the ABC Management to observe its own charter – to be an ABC for everyone – and restore local sports coverage on the ABC.

 

62   Mr Meier, from 535 residents of South Australia, requesting the House to urge the Government to immediately make additional funding available to the Wallaroo Hospital (Northern Yorke Peninsula Health Service) to allow joint replacement surgery and other essential health services to continue.

 

63   Mr Scalzi, from 55 residents of South Australia, requesting the House to reject Voluntary Euthanasia legislation; ensure all hospital medical staff receive proper palliative care training and provide adequate funding of palliative care procedures for all terminally ill patients.

17      Privileges Committee - Extension of time

Order of the Day read for the Report of the Privileges Committee to be brought up.

The Attorney-General (Hon M J Atkinson) moved - That the time for bringing up the Report be extended until Monday 3 May 2004.

Question put and passed.

 

18      Postponement of business

Ordered - That Orders of the Day: Government Business Nos 2 and 3 be postponed and taken into consideration after Order of the Day: Government Business No 4.

 

19      Statutes Amendment (Courts) Bill

         Order of the Day read for the further consideration in Committee of this Bill.

Clause No 7 agreed to.

 

Mr Hanna moved on page 6, after line 34, to insert  new clause No 7A as follows –

7A        Amendment of section 7 – Jurisdiction

            Section 7(4)(a) – delete “twice a Division 1 fine” and insert

            $2 000 000

Question – That new clause No 7A be inserted – put and negatived.
