Objectives of Travel

Purpose was to meet and discuss options for assisting drought affected farmers, small business operators and communities including local government and regional development operatives_ Briefsummaries of the study areas pursued in the places visited The area studied in each of the places visited was the effect of the drought on the regional communities of the Eyre Peninsula_ Each meeting held in each town was used as a forum for primary producers to voice their concerns and to detail their experience of the drought. Items discussed included the levels of government assistance that farmers need, the loss of farm workers to the mining industry, health care needs and the transport needs in these areas. Visited Port Lincoln and metwith prawn, tuna, sardine and regional development operatives in Port Lincoln and attended a Staying Strong meeting aimed at boosting community moral for drought affected residents in Cowell that evening_ Summary of Results Achieved The opportunity to join the tour organised by SAFF was of great benefit I received an updated view of the on the ground situation across the Eyre Peninsula and received a range of recommendations from the effected communities which have been used to formulate possible policy.
