Although, the general population is starting to buy more wines, agents
tend to specialise in more
boutique wines for the Jockey Club (the richest club in
Hong Kong), restaurants, hotels and corporate
events . More weddings are also now serving
imported wine, whereas this was unheard of prior to the
last 10 years.
6.00pm
Meeting with Rex Chi-Hang Tse, potential SABAN
Ambassador .
5/F Flourish Food Mfy. Centre
18 Tai Lee Street, Yuen Long, N.T, Hong Kong.
After doing his degree in Mechanical Engineering, Rex moved to Canada with his wife Lila and sons
Rexson and Oscar. His grandfather started the Wing Wah Restaurant and Foodstuffs business a century
ago . His father, together with several other families, combined to expand the business, but it was only
when Rex returned from Canada to help look after the family's interest in the business did it start to
steal the Hong Kong market . Rex studied his MBA
in South Australia and therefore has very strong ties
with this state. His son Rexson is currently in the 3rd Year of his Medical Degree at Adelaide
University which means that Rex and Lila continue be frequent visitors to our state and could not
praise our university system highly enough . The Wing Wah group now
has over 30 outlets in Hong
Kong specialising in traditional Chinese food and cakes. Food stores and pre prepared foods are co-
located with some outlets for those who
want to cook at home . One of the most important outlets has
been set out at the new
Hong Kong Airport and continues to be one of Rex's proudest achievements .
He believes that it caters to the tourist market ensuring that the many hundreds of thousands of visitors
to Hong Kong have immediate access to genuine Chinese food of the highest quality. We
were pleased
to be able to put Peter Chu (wine importer) in touch with Rex, as Rex has not really explored the
provision of wine for his restaurants .
Rex's son Oscar
joined us for the second part of
our meeting. Oscar is a paediatric dentist and we
were
able to talk to him about fluoridisation, healthy diet and childhood
obesity. Hong Kong does have
serious concerns about the changing effects of diet on its youth. Up to now, the
traditional Chinese diet,
which is high in vegetables with some protein and low in sugar,
was extremely healthy. The
introduction of American chains such as McDonalds and KFC
are rightly causing concern across the
Medical and Dental fraternity .
