Forensic Science South Australia
Forensic Science South Australia provides a wide
range of forensic science and pathology services
across the following operational areas:
• Biology - examination of biological trace
evidence, DNA analysis of body fluids and
related materials
• Chemistry & materials – examination and
analysis of physical and chemical trace
evidence (eg paint, glass, firearm and
explosives residues), analysis of illicit drugs
(eg street seizures, clandestine laboratories,
botanical identification of cannabis plants and
crops) and examination of documents and
handwriting
• Pathology: post mortem examination
• Toxicology: analysis of blood and tissue
samples for drugs and poisons.

Driver, motorcycle rider, cyclist and pedestrian
fatalities remained steady in 2015 from 2014
28 per cent of driver and passenger fatalities in 2015 were not wearing a
seatbelt at the time of the crash
speeding was considered a contributing factor in 30 per cent of fatal crashes
in 2015
22 per cent of drivers/riders killed in fatal crashes in 2015 had an illegal
blood alcohol concentration
24 per cent of drivers/riders killed in 2015 tested positive for the presence
of cannabis, methamphetamine or ecstasy or a combination of these drugs.

We rejected an application for medicinal cannabis for a person with a mental health
condition, because we could find no research, nor could the treating doctor find any research, that demonstrated
that medicinal cannabis would actually be helpful in addressing the mental health condition.

Statistical Monitoring
• The Office produced a number of comprehensive statistical reports, including three volumes
of 'Crime and Justice in South Australia'
• Numerous statistically based Information Bulletins were also released on topics such as
graffiti vandalism, stalking, cause death by dangerous driving, the use of Cannabis Expiation
Notices and drug-related property crime.

Reducing illegal drug use
Amendments to the Controlled Substances Act 1984 provide for a new offence:
possession of equipment or documents relating to the manufacture of a controlled
drug (such as varieties of amphetamines) or the cultivation of a controlled plant (in
particular cannabis) without reasonable excuse
