The Social Development Committee is inquiring into the prevalence and effectiveness of programs in preschools and schools to ensure children and young people don’t go hungry during the day.

How to make a submission - 

The inquiry will consider -

a) the proportion of children and young people in South Australia who go to preschool and school without having breakfast and/or bring lunch;
b) the academic and social impacts of preschool and school hunger;
c) the effectiveness of the recently expanded public schools breakfast program in 2023 by the South Australian Government;
d) ways to support families to decrease the number of children and young people going to preschool and school hungry;
e) the operation of other national and international preschool and school meal programs and their effectiveness; and
f) any other related matters.

The Committee invites submissions addressing the terms of reference from interested organisations and individuals. In particular submissions from professionals in education, nutrition, medical and allied health, and logistics, and non-government organisations providing services in this space, are encouraged. Any person or organisation wanting to lodge a written submission or register an interest in presenting oral evidence is invited to do so by COB 13 June 2025. Please note, the Committee reserves the right to determine which witnesses will be invited to provide an oral submission. Written submissions that address issues outside the terms of reference may not be accepted.
